“I can live for two months on a good compliment.”
– Mark Twain.
That’s wonderful Mr. Twain, but I sincerely don’t think many people can live off of 6 compliments per year!
Who doesn’t love compliments? I know, I do. .it’s sheer happiness when someone praises you. It’s like all the ‘Self doubt’ is melting away. .when I hear people praising me, I get this big smile on my face. .
But is it healthy?
As Freud has said, “we are able to defend ourselves from attack but never from a compliment.” After a while, we start craving for attention. It becomes a necessity to be approved by people. Thanks to social media, this pool of people has increased from family & friends to strangers. .
Do not judge me, but this was the scene a while back –
My heart : love this picture, upload it.
Brain : but would it fetch 100 or more likes?
Vanity : Ah! Apparently, No! Click another.
& before I forget to mention, Vanity wins. Almost all the time. .
But imagine, just imagine. . How peaceful your life would be, if no one needed any praise. .Imagine a world where people don’t desire to get attention. .where there is no need to be validated by others. .
Sweet praises? Ignore.
Sour remarks? Ignore.
Iam not saying attention is bad. Iam saying, ‘need for attention’ is bad. Iam not saying ‘stop using social media & Go to himalayas & meditate’, Iam saying, ‘don’t give a damn to what people think. They don’t define you. You do.’
Just relax. Breathe.
Moreover, Praises are an addiction. We often try to change ourselves to impress others. .to be good enough to get more accolades. .What we don’t realise is, how unhealthy it is. .Thanks to social media, we often surround ourselves with people who flatter us. .feign being genuine. .people who make us feel like we are trading compliments for compliments. .Validation for Validation & unfortunately, also, Judgement for Judgement. .Never trust a compliment in return of a compliment. .The fact is, you’ll find yourself in a happy place, the moment you stop trying to impress others. .
Key to a healthy relationship is where there are no false pretences. .haven’t you heard of this famous line, “I love you, because I can be myself with you.” Well, why can’t you be yourself with others. What’s stopping you? It is okay to be you, without requiring constant affirmation from others. .accept yourself, accept others. .trust me, it’s a lot better than fighting for attention. .
One guy commented on one of my Instagram post, “you just missed out on height, otherwise super hot.” Well, life is small and so am I. To be honest, for a while (actually more than a while) I worried, regretted my height (including pestering my friends with the same question again & again – am I too short?). .and for what? One lame comment? Was it even worth it?
It took me a long time to understand, it is okay not being perfect. And more importantly, it is okay when people say you’re not perfect.
This world we live in, needs our patience, & yes, acceptance. .
Just to be clear, I am not saying praises are bad. .Accept compliments, but don’t let it bolster your ego. .You don’t need them to feel beautiful. .don’t change yourself to please others. .Appreciate yourself. .You are beautiful, just the way you are! Find your peace. .
Having said that, Never underestimate the power of random compliments. .they can make someone’s day. .See good in people. .
Appreciate others. .Be kind. .Spread the love ❤
Awesome post as always! I agree with you. Learn to take the compliments with humility. Learn to ignore the negative criticism that is meant to bring you down. The spirit, soul, energy or whatever you would like to call it is PERFECT as it is and the rest is all imperfection. All of us need to understand that and be accepting of who we are because NO ONE is perfect and neither is life, situations, circumstances or others. That is the BEAUTY of it all! Moreover, I have been taught this by my parents, “Never give the remote control of your emotions to someone else because all they will do is push buttons at random.” So let’s not be affected by what other people say and think of us but be sure to have our own ideals and care about how we feel about ourselves. That type of strength is always inspirational!

Random aside: some men prefer short women. I don’t find myself attracted to tall women. So take that as a compliment, unless you were fishing, in which case I take it back 😉

Who doesn’t like compliments? It really is more about not becoming reliant on them, and learning to accept them from the people that are genuinely trying to make you feel better, or sincerely wish to tell you how they feel.

…you are simply amazing and unique, Reva. If people won’t make this world a better place, then I wonder who ever will. There is an addictiveness in your blog 🙂 …my wife is a master in making compliments to complete strangers when she sees their beauty ( which does not need to be physical but could be anything like a gesture, how the handle things, etc.) , and it is funny to see how people start to bloom for a moment when addressed this way. They become aware that somebody just noticed them as a human being and not just as an anonymous service provider, checkout clerk, driver, etc. ) … I am totally in love with my wife for this trait in her character … and I am trying to learn from her. We are living in Germany an people here have a hard time showing emotions in public. It is my experience when a German is complimenting it is genuine. (well I am German … well done Reva!!! …and I hope to read a lot more from you) …PS: emailing did not work 😦

Thank you for this 🙂 I wanna say that I recently, this week that is, took a pledge to never edit my pictures. Editing pictures makes us look flawless which we aren’t. And yes, I have been doing it to ‘get more likes’. But it was a short term happiness. I knew that people were praising the edited version of me. So finally I took the lead and posted my unedited pictures. It made me happy 🙂 I can relate to your post 🙂

Compliment is a double edge sword, some take it the way it is, and for others it induces a need or desire to attain more. Now that is not an unhealthy thing to do, but the path one chooses to attain the same defines what it is. Great post. Work hard, so you will be complimented. Don’t work hard just for the sake of getting complimented.

there is a saying -If you call a girl beautiful, she’ll believe you for minutes. If you call a girl ugly, she’ll believe it forever.
that doesn’t mean she wants a compliment the thing is ,we humans love to get attention, hear compliments from others and yes positive compliments.
nowadays people click pictures not just to make memories to post them on your social networking site fb wats app.. no matter how much you or i say that we don’t need attention but let call a person who says something about ourself and we will be the first one affected 😉 be strong no matter what your height is, you should have a beautiful heart and yes you are having that, i can see 🙂

Let me start by complimenting you. You are very beautiful with the most charming smile. You’ve written a masterpiece here which needs to be read and re-read. Bravo! I believe in compliments; and I think we do not compliment others enough. Compliments can do wonders in people’s lives; but as you rightly say, if they do not come that should not spoil our day. No one should be defined by compliments. What I enjoy most in your post is the balance. You state it very clearly. You are not against compliments. but we don’t need them to validate us. The quote by Jill Scott fits perfectly in this post. Don’t keep a compliment if you find something worth complimenting in someone. I want to assure you I love this post and you sound sweet through it. Keep shining!

Your blog’s got famous already, Reva. So many likes & comments straightway is a clear signal of making it big. I think it’s time that you start paying attention at the ethics of it. Give credits to the original artists of the images that you use by mentioning the source. You can add a hyperlink below an image or just link it while uploading from your Dashboard. Play it nice & legit.

Excuse me? If there’s a quote by someone in the image, their name is mentioned. .Just like Jill Scott in the end. .and second, it’s not about being famous. . And Mere 80 likes doesn’t make it famous. .nevertheless, I have 8k followers on twitter and none of my friends and family are even aware that I have an account, so do not tell me that. Third, legit? Are you saying Iam copying someone else’s work? I found the images on pinterest, and the ones I used were pinned by someone else, so do you expect me to go all the way where it started. . Who made that image and then post a link about it? News flash – blogging is what I like, not my work. .which apparently you don’t seem to think well. . So next time, think twice before saying something like that. .

I like that. Please, do. Not only do the smiles look good but also they bring light and joy to many. I will definitely find a way to paste that smile on my site so I can see it often. If I say it is electrifying it is neither flattery nor exaggeration. If those close to you have not said this then they are definitely not blessed with the gift of appreciation or compliment. Smile again; and now for two days.

You got me totally wrong, Reva. Comment about the likes & reach of your blog post was a compliment. I’ve been blogging for 3 years & yet have never received this amount of likes. May be that’s the reason I feel your blog post did so well.
Nor do I blog for money, I blog coz I like it & it has given me an identity in some way.
I never said that your content was copied. In fact no one can ever say that, it’s original in its every possible way. Didn’t I appreciate your content before?
About the ethics of blogging, it’s always said that you should give a hyperlink to the owner of the creative. That adds to their credibility. Mentioning just their name won’t do any good to their SEO. That’s the basic funda behind giving a hyeperlink.
About the Pinterest pins, be it Pinterest or anything on internet where you might have found the image, there’s no need to research for the original source, you’re recommended to mention the hyperlink from where you found the image. As simple as that.
I still don’t understand what part of my comment offended you. All I tried to do was a little help.

This is a wonderful post specially cause it puts the bitter yet beautiful truth. Nothing makes a woman beautiful than the thought that she is beautiful herself. I do agree compliments are necessary to keep yourself boosted and feel confident but they should not become a necessity and lack of which would make one insecure. All those editing and brightening and all the other a b c of photo editing can only work on pictures and not on the human being…so i guess one needs to beautiful in thoughts and action !! Lovely blog and would be coming back for more for sure!!! Happy blogging gal!! 🙂 🙂

Compliments are great to receive but it’s strange that we don’t always believe them… For example, when a guy says you look good in a dress… I usually wonder if they do mean it, especially if you asked him how it looks… And our reaction is always like, no you’re lying…I look bloated or fat or whatever… Maybe it’s the lack of self confidence that does this after seeing a beautiful woman on the street, rocking a bodycon dress and she doesn’t even have a tummy…

I believe complementing someone puts a smile on their face and a in their heart a warm space.

Hey, regarding this, “One guy commented on one of my Instagram post, ‘you just missed out on height, otherwise super hot.'” That sounds like a lame attempt at what’s called “negging.” Once you recognize what they’re trying to do, it just falls flat. See https://www.google.com/#q=negging: Negging is a rhetorical strategy whereby a person makes a deliberate backhanded compliment or otherwise insulting remark to another person in order to undermine his or her confidence in a way that gains approval…
Loved this post! I have a similar cautious regard for those who overdo compliments.

Great post. I am reminded of a research I once came across. The researchers were trying to determine the point after which compliments stop working. Basically, they complimented people until their subjects asked them to stop.
Turns out, there is no such point. We’ll eat up compliments as long as they are served to us.

I think what matters most is that you don’t let all the praises get to you. It’s fine to feel happy about it but there’s a fine line between being joyous when someone appreciates you and when it actually dictates your identity. ☺

Happy Diwali ! 🙂 It might be inappropriate to sketch you, but to share with you might be even more so. What is the protocol in such cases ? Please advise 🙂
Love.

You always bless my soul with your rich and undiluted musings. If you don’t mind, i’d love to reblog this sometime.
I have nominated you especially for the Sisterhood award, and I hope you accept it from me with as much love as ‘ve conferred it to you.

Really liked this one. Well written too! Personally, I think if you know in your heart you are good, you don’t ever need compliments. Same goes for ‘self esteem’. We don’t need to rise above others to feel good. If we do, we’re looking at it the wrong way. 🙂 now lets see some poetry from that sweet heart! your own…
